In 1993 I completed my graduate studies at San Francisco State University. After six years of
determination and self-discipline, I had earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Liberal Arts, a
Bachelor of Studies Degree in Liberal Studies, and a Master of Science Degree in
Counseling. I was thrilled and felt a great sense of accomplishment, but I was also $20,000 in
debt. In spite of the fact that I had lived a Spartan life and sold many personal possessions in
order to pay for tuition and purchase textbooks, I was struggling financially.

As an undergraduate student, I had earned several small scholarships and tried researching
for more grants and scholarships. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the resources in the late 80’s
that are available now. My only options were to work 20 hours a week and to apply for
student loans. Once I entered graduate school, my time became even more precious. My
plan was to complete my counseling degree in two years so that I could start working to pay
my student loans.
